Getting Started

First things first, you’ll need to apply for a provisional licence. You’re eligible at 15 years and 9 months, as long as you can read a number plate from 20 metres. This provisional licence is your starting point for all motorbike licences in the UK.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

For riders who got their driving test before 1 February 2001, you can legally ride a 50cc moped without completing your CBT. However, if you took your driving test after that date, you’ll need Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before riding on the road. Our CBT course at SuperBike Factory Motorbike Training School covers the essentials, from riding basics to road practice, getting you prepared to handle a 125cc moped or motorcycle with L-plates. It’s a straightforward course led by DVSA-approved instructors, valid for two years, and includes sections from eyesight checks to practical riding experience. Examples of bikes you’ll be able to ride are the KTM 125 or Honda CB125R.  If you’re 16, completing the CBT will allow you to ride a 50cc Moped with L-Plates.

A1 Motorcycle Licence

For those aged 17-18, an A1 licence allows you to ride a 125cc motorbike without L-plates, carry a pillion passenger, and use motorways. Achieving the A1 licence requires completing the CBT, passing both practical modules of the motorcycle test and a theory test. Our Training School courses offer straightforward support through each stage to get you on the road confidently.

A2 Motorcycle Licence

Riders aged 19-23 can aim for an A2 licence, allowing them to ride bikes with a maximum power output of 35kW (46.6bhp) or any restricted bike meeting A2 requirements. With an A2 licence, you’re free to carry passengers, ride motorways, and remove L-plates. If you’ve held an A2 licence for at least two years, you may later qualify for a Category A licence without the power-to-weight ratio restrictions. The A2 course at SuperBike Factory Motorbike Training School covers all the essential skills needed to complete the motorcycle test and pass both theory and practical exams.

Category A Motorcycle Licence

The Category A licence allows you to ride a motorcycle of any size, without restrictions on power output. If you’re over 24 (or 21 with two years on an A2), you can complete your full motorcycle licence by passing the necessary tests and gaining the freedom to ride any bike, with or without passengers, on any road.

Our Training School is here to support you at every stage, from completing your CBT to gaining a full motorcycle licence. With courses tailored to your goals, SuperBike Factory Motorbike Training School will set you up to ride confidently and legally.

In conclusion, obtaining a full motorbike licence involves a step-by-step process, varying with age and existing licences. With careful preparation and dedication, you'll soon find yourself cruising confidently on the open road.
